The sky around the IKAREE is built from astronomical catalogues, not drawn by hand. About 11,000 real named stars with their confirmed exoplanets from the NASA Exoplanet Archive, and famous nebulae, all at their real positions. Any of them is a valid destination: name it and the helm lays in a course.

Voyager 1

Humanity's most distant spacecraft, launched in 1977 and still drifting outward beyond the heliopause with its Golden Record. In IKAREE you can fly out to it: interstellar space beyond the heliopause, about 170 au from the sun.

How the sky is made

Star positions, brightness and colour come from the HYG Database, a merge of the Hipparcos, Yale Bright Star and Gliese catalogues. Exoplanets come from the NASA Exoplanet Archive. The Milky Way itself is NASA's Deep Star Maps panorama. The 31 destinations on this page are modelled in detail; real photographs and maps are used for the Solar System, while exoplanet surfaces are artist impressions, because nobody has photographed them yet.

On the bridge, Hart can name the star you are looking at, and the helm accepts real catalogue names: "Set a course for Kepler-186 f", "Take us to Vega", "Warp six to the Orion Nebula".
